If the windows on your home are old and outdated, it is a good decision to install new ones. They not only look better, but offer you many benefits. Before you start shopping for your windows, there are some things you should take into consideration. Keep reading so you will be satisfied with your new windows.

Type of Window

The first thing you have to decide is the type of window you want to install on your home. Some options you have are single-hung windows, double-hung windows, and casement style windows.

One thing to take into consideration when choosing windows is how easy they are to clean. For example, double-hung window are easy to clean because both the window and sash tilt inward.  Single-hung windows are difficult to clean, because the top sash does not tilt in or move. Casement windows open outward with a crank, which makes them easy to clean.

Window Material

You will find windows made of fiberglass, aluminum, vinyl, and wood. Fiberglass windows are durable, and you can have them made to mimic wood. Aluminum windows are strong but lightweight. The frame can be very slim but can still support any glass. Vinyl windows are low in maintenance, and you have many color options. Colors include green, brown, champagne, and cream.  Wood frame windows offers good insulation, and are the most durable option.

Window Glass

You will have many glass options for your new windows including:

  • Insulated clear glass: Very energy efficient glass.
  • Low-E glass:  Protects you from harmful UV rays
  • Tinted glass: Reduces the sun's glare, and is energy efficient.
  • Laminated glass: Reduces breakage because is made of two or more glass layers that have been bonded together.
  • Double glazing glass: This glass, also known as insulated glass, has two glass panes bonded together. Argon gas fills the space between the two glasses to increase insulation.

Window Shape

If your home already has windows, you are likely going to choose windows that are the same size and shape. If you are remodeling your home, however, you should consider choosing a different shape and/or size. For example, you could choose a circular window, a bay window, a cathedral window, or an eyebrow window.
